Skåne is the birthplace of the first practical device for kidney dialysis. Professor Nils Alwall's invention, developed by Gambro, has literally saved thousands of lives all over the world.
2. Turning Torso
Scandinavia's tallest and most twisted landmark in Malmö, was designed by Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava.
3. The Portable Phone
Ericsson developed their first portable analogue handset in Lund in 1985.
4. Milk Carton for the World
The first milk carton was invented and produced in Skåne by Tetra Pak. An idea that has had an enormous impact globally, helping to “protect what’s good”. Today the company is the leading food processing and packaging solutions provider.
5. Absolut Vodka
Registered in 1878 and still solely produced in Åhus, a small town in Skåne. Absolutely true!
The Bluetooth technology was invented in Skåne by a team led by the engineer Sven Mathissen. At the time he was reading a novel about a Viking king called Harald Blåtand (translates to Bluetooth). The logo includes Harald’s initials in a Viking bind rune.
7. Zlatan Ibrahimovic
is from Malmö, the largest city in Skåne.
Two Lund university students invented the Hövding cycle helmet (an airbag worn like a scarf). They wanted to design headgear that would save your life without ruining your hairstyle. No more hair-raising journeys to work.
9. International x150
Malmö’s citizens come from many other countries. 174 nationalities are represented, and about 150 languages are spoken.
10. Skåne was once Danish
Skåne became Swedish in 1658, before that the region belonged to Denmark. The Danish connection is still visible in the Skåne flag.
